Introduction
Nowadays, we tend to take for granted many key services provided by private structures and public institutions, among them we include parking lots. Think about the simplicity of leaving your car somewhere safe and secure without having to worry about a thing. Cool, isn’t it?
However, in order to keep the whole structure of a car park protected and waterproofed there are specific procedures to be taken into account. If you consider that the average weight of a car is over one ton, it comes naturally that the structure of car parks needs to always be strong and protected with performant traffic coatings.
In this article we will talk about some of the challenges that we have to consider when waterproofing and protecting parking lots and we will then introduce Winkler One Flooring and explain why it could be the best solution for this specific need.
Parking lots and traffic coatings
Car parks are high-traffic areas. They are constantly subject to pedestrian traffic, vehicular traffic and are exposed to unmerciful circumstances such as weather changes throughout the year, and to aggressive and corrosive factors such as oil and diesel spills, carbon dioxide, de-icing products, salt and water.
All of these elements can become a serious problem if the waterproofing system fails as it weakens the integrity of the building’s structure. In addition to that, if there are already some cracks in the concrete decks, then the problem just gets bigger.
As a matter of fact, although concrete slabs tend to appear strong and almost unbreakable, this is not true.
As we mentioned above, the mechanical impact given by the weight of cars (especially the massive effect of wheels turning under the weight of the vehicle) and the chemical impact given by exhaust fumes, brake fluids, salt and water, if not properly handled, weakens the pavement and may bring to concrete erosion. This, in turn, compromises the safety and durability of the car park structure. Therefore, choosing the best traffic coatings is fundamental.
Why Winkler One Flooring could be the best solution as traffic coatings
The issues we talked about so far can be prevented by using a protective waterproofing and traffic coating system that must:
- Have crack-bridging properties;
- Withstand the stress of car parks.
Winkler One Flooring is a protective liquid waterproofing traffic coating, specifically studied for the application on vehicle accessible floorings. It is a one-component coloured product, which offers superior general resilience and is able to resist vehicular traffic. Winkler One Flooring can be applied on humid and wet surfaces, on both internal and external areas, even under extreme temperatures (0 to 45 C or 32 to 104 F). It is available in the following colors:
- Dark grey
- Light grey
- Red
- Green
- White (signage)
- Yellow (signage)
The application of Winkler One Flooring
Before applying One Flooring, it is fundamental to make sure that the surfaces are completely clean, smooth and free from loose materials or other foreign non-stick substances.
If there is oil on the surface, we recommend removing 2mm of the surface and applying One Primer, followed by loose quartz. After 24 hours, it is possible to use Pre-One to create the layer removed earlier.
On the other hand, in the event of uneven parts, before applying One Flooring, it is recommended to use a special mortar named Pre-One. At this point, Winkler One Flooring can be applied and it does not need any primer.
If there are cracks in the substrate we have to treat, it is fundamental to prepare it (before the application of Winkler One Flooring) using one of the following products: Unibar Formula, Unibar Malta and Unibar SL.
These are solvent-free resin products that easily treat, restore and prepare the surface that has become uneven or has cracks.
